A 77-year-old man in Salina, Kansas lost $200,000 in a lottery scam. Scammers claimed he had won the Mega Millions lottery and a new vehicle, and instructed him to purchase prepaid debit cards to redeem his supposed prize. The victim was then told to sell a vehicle and put the money in an account, but the money disappeared.
SALINA Kan. (KWCH) - A 77-year-old Salina man lost 200 000 to scammers who claimed he had won the Mega Millions lottery and a new vehicle police said. Two people contacted the man and told him he needed to purchase prepaid debit cards to redeem his supposed prize according to Salina Police. The scammers said the man had to buy prepaid debit cards in 500 increments to cover legal and processing fees. Police said a third person then called the Salina man and told him he was being scammed but claimed they could help reverse the damage. The third scammer told the victim to send additional money through prepaid debit cards to fix the problem. The victim was then told to buy a vehicle sell it and put the money in an account. When the victim did that the money disappeared police said. Mega Millions said a representative of the lottery will never call text or email anyone about winning a prize. Copyright 2025 KWCH.
